Dear Friend,

2022 has been a year of tremendous growth and success for us at Hindus for Human Rights. As we reflect back on this year, we can't help but feel immense gratitutde towards all our donors and supporters. We urge our readers to be inspired by the verses from the Gita and understand the significance of our work in challenging hate, violence and injustice in South Asia and across the South Asian diaspora, and becoming a strong public Hindu advocate of peace and harmony among all communities in the society.

Some of our wins this year have been:

  • Convening dozens of Hindu religious leaders from 6 countries to publish a statement condemning Hindu nationalism and violence against Muslims in India,
  • Challenging displays of hate in Edison, NJ's parade which resulted in an apology by organizers
  • De-platforming a violent Hindu extremist leader, Sadhvi Ritambhara, from speaking at events across the US
  • Convening the first ever Indian-American delegation to Selma, AL, for a historic commemoration of the Civil Rights Movement.
  • Organizing multi-faith, anti-caste Deepavali/Diwali celebrations at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., and in the Bay Area, and being invited to the White House and U.S. State Department's festivities as well.

And we are not the only ones beaming with pride, but also our supporter and advisory board member Swara Bhasker! Hear what she has to say about us...

Anti-Caste Initiatives
HfHR co-sponsored a Congressional Briefing with the Indian American Muslim Council on caste discrimination, shedding light on what this ancient system of discrimination and stratification is, and how it has found its way into the country's top tech-companies and inside major universities.
After US universities instituted protections against caste-based discrimination, attempts are being made away to reverse these crucial gains. Join a panel of experts as they debunk the myths being used to attack these protections.
Art as Resistance
We partnered with Tasveer for two film screenings, Wheels on the Bus and Sethumaan, as part of the 17th TSAFF! The 17th Tasveer South Asian Film Festival includes 24 features and 79 short films spanning 17 countries and 15 languages, including 12 world premieres and 24 U.S. premieres. The lineup showcased work that challenged patriarchy and amplified gender justice, embodying the festival’s theme “Unapologetically South Asian.”

We also co-sponsored a film screening and discussion with The Centre for Free Expression at Toronto Metropolitan University and Leena Manimekalai, along with PEN Canada, Poetic Justice Foundation, Dalit Solidarity Forum, India Civil Watch and Humanists International.
Inter-faith Initiatives
HfHR co-founder Raju spoke at an interfaith banquet in Sacramento.
HfHR team had a great time at Interfaith America's celebration of their Black Interfaith Fellows, hosted at the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture. From the writings of Omar ibn Said to the Black speakers at the 1893 Parliament of World's Religions in Chicago, to contemporary movements for racial justice, Black communities have always been religiously diverse and spaces for interfaith dialogue and bridge-building.
HfHR-ANZ Chapter Updates
This month HfHR-ANZ took on the role of leading the Discussion Circle for the Muslim Collective on the topic "Exploring the Divine Feminine in Hindu and Muslim Traditions". We explored the notion of the divine feminine in our different traditions, through an unpacking of academic writing and lived experience of syncretic Hindu/Muslim practices in India. It was a wonderfully passionate discussion.

Musician, ethnomusicologist and anthropological linguist at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music Dr. Mahesh White Radhakrishnan from HfHR-ANZ spoke beautifully in this riveting episode of Soul Search. It was an expansive exploration of Hinduism, diversity, music, language and prakriti, all told through Mahesh’s journey in life. Mahesh is also part of the ABC’s Top Five Arts media residency program

HfHR ANZ participated in a beautifully orchestrated lobbying event with the state treasurer and energy minister Matt Kean. Along with over 200 people in Parramatta Mission, Mahesh White-Radhakrishnan and Shanti Raman from HfHR ANZ, robustly engaged with the minister.
HfHR-ANZ's sister organization NRI Affairs organized a conversation on 'Pause with Nandini' with Darshan Mondkar, a keen social commentator on his experience of the Bharat Jodo Yatra
HfHR Community Meet-ups

Latest from HfHR and PAIGAM
In this episode of Ulti Pulti Baat, we discuss the hypocrisy with which NRIs embrace the idea of Hinduism and foster anti-Muslim prejudices. Do they ever call for the lynching of beef-eaters abroad?
In this episode of Ulti Pulti Baat, we use the Shraddha Murder case to highlight that violence against women is widespread in India, and is not only perpetrated by men belonging to a particular religion.
