September 1, 2022

HfHR's Monthly Newsletter serves as your guide to our progressive Hindu advocacy over the past month! Read on to learn about our webinars, podcasts, articles, advocacy updates, anti-caste initiatives, and more.

Dear Friend,

In August, we celebrated many festivals such as Nag Panchami, Rakshabandhan, Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi and Hartalika Teej that brought all of us together as families. We also witnessed Indian Independence Day celebrations which were filled with the pseudo-nationalist gimmicks of "Har Ghar Jhanda" and Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav campaigns when the core democratic values of right to freedom of speech, secularism, fraternity and social justice have been held hostage by the current government. It is in this context that we share the poem, though first published last year but still relevant today, whose essence is captured by the phrase "Bhartiyo se mohabbat karlo, bharat se apne aap ho jaegi" (Loving your fellow Indians will inevitably make you love India). Also, read what HfHR Members' Reflections are on 75 Years of Indian Independence.

It is in this spirit that, over the past month, we have sprung into action, continuing our advocacy for pluralism, civil rights, and human rights for all in a number of fields—including some powerful in-person events. Read on to learn more!

Fight against Hindutva
This month HfHR joined the Sikh Coalition, ACLU and 160+ organizations in calling on Department of Homeland Security to stop the mistreatment of religious migrants. Our Executive Director Sunita Viswanath spoke post-Jumu'ah via video call at Claremont Main Road Masjid on Hindu Muslim Ekta being the cornerstone of an inclusive India and diaspora.

Further, HfHR Deputy Executive Director Nikhil Mandalaparthy spoke to BBC discussing how the idea of Hinduphobia has been used to silence dissent against Hindu nationalism, even when that dissent is expressed by Hindus. He also spoke at World Without Genocide's "Genocide Warning: India" webinar about the persecution of Muslims in India by the Indian government.

HfHR cofounder and board member Deepak Gupta attended a public town hall meeting in Edison, NJ, calling on mayor Sami Joshi to condemn the display of a bulldozer by Hindu nationalists at an Independence Day parade last week.

Annual Strategic Retreat
From August 4th - August 8th, HfHR Staff and Board members gathered in Taos, New Mexico for our annual retreat. We discussed the future of our organization, and outlined strategies for advancing different parts of our work, from Congressional advocacy to student outreach, to combatting disinformation, and more! We also spent some time speaking to community members who wanted to bring us their ideas and feedback, and engaged with them on how we can incorporate their ideas into the work we do. Thank you to our co-founder and Executive Director Sunita, for hosting us, and showing us the gems of Taos, and helping us bond and get to know one another outside of our zoom screens!
Comedy Fundraiser
On Sunday, August 21st, HfHR hosted a comedy fundraiser featuring both Indian and Indian-American comedians. Hosted by New-York based comedian Kaneez Surka, the event featured Indian comedians Kajol Srinivasan, Rajeev Nigam, Vibhor Chaudhary, and Nalin Yadav, and Indian-American comedians Yamini Nambimadom, and Abby Govindan. We had 75 people join our zoom webinar as part of the audience and enjoyed two hours of laughs as a reprieve from the seriousness of the topics we engage with day to day in our work!
Anti-Caste Initiatives

HfHR extensively supported Dalit Shakti Kendra (DSK), Navsarjan Trust, and Dalit Foundation in the "March for an Untouchability-free India" from August 1-7 whose demand was to end casteism and untouchability in India. We started a petition in support of the march and when the peaceful march was stopped by the State, we wrote about it to publicize the undemocratic nature of the current government which has left no space for citizens to voice their opinions. HfHR Advisory Board member Swara Bhaskar also spoke to Martin Macwan about untouchability in India and the symbolism of the coin in the march.

The CISCO case clearly has huge implications beyond the immediate antagonists. If the trial proceeds, it will be an opportunity to educate the mostly privileged 'upper caste' Hindu-American community that caste biases have indeed traveled to the US, not only in social settings, but also in the workplace. And that we must take responsibility to educate and advocate to eradicate casteism in the workplace and at educational institutions. HfHR is doing its bit towards these goals, with the lead being taken by Dalit organizations. Our ally Ambedkar International Center is seeking to be an Amicus in this case and HfHR has been in support of their effort.

This episode of #UltiPultiBaat tackles the claims that normalcy has returned to the Kashmir Valley. Is the prolonged collective punishment of an entire community BJP's definition of 'normalcy'?

It's been a busy month, to say the least! We want to keep the intensity of this enthusiasm and passion going forward. Your support energizes us to build a bold and radically inclusive Hindu public voice which opposes Hindutva and caste, and prioritizes the rights of marginalized communities.

Once again, thank you for your continuous support and well-wishes!
