Rajmohan Gandhi
Rajmohan Gandhi is a historian, biographer, journalist, public intellectual, and former member of the Rajya Sabha whose work has focused on democracy, human rights, communal harmony, nonviolence, and the history of South Asia. Born in New Delhi in 1935, he is the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi and C. Rajagopalachari.
Across more than six decades, Gandhi has combined scholarship, journalism, teaching, peacebuilding, and public service. He has taught at institutions including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Michigan State University, the Centre for Policy Research, and the Indian Institutes of Technology in Bombay and Gandhinagar. He has also been closely associated with Initiatives of Change since the 1950s.
Gandhi served in the Rajya Sabha from 1990 to 1992 and led India’s delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Commission in Geneva in 1990. As a journalist, he founded the weekly magazine Himmat in 1964 and later served as Resident Editor of The Indian Express.
A prolific author, Gandhi has written major biographies of Mahatma Gandhi, C. Rajagopalachari, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. His books include Rajaji: A Life, Mohandas, Punjab, Modern South India, India After 1947, and Fraternity. In 2026, he published Do You Know Your Hinduism? Notes for Modern-Day Hindus and James Lawson: Teacher of Satyagraha.
In recent years, Gandhi has continued to write and speak on democracy, pluralism, human dignity, reconciliation, and nonviolence. Through We Are One Humanity and his regular column How I See It, he remains an important voice in public debates about faith, ethics, citizenship, and democratic life.
Rajmohan Gandhi and Hindus for Human Rights
A Longstanding Voice of Moral Clarity, Democracy, and Peace
Across his work with HfHR, Rajmohan Gandhi has offered historical depth, ethical clarity, and a steady commitment to pluralism, democracy, nonviolence, and human dignity. For audiences preparing to attend or listen to his events, these resources offer a window into the values and public commitments that shape his voice.
Public Solidarity with HfHR
Gandhi has publicly stood with Hindus for Human Rights and its partners during moments of pressure and attack. In 2021, he joined hundreds of academics and scholars in expressing solidarity with HfHR and allied organizations in response to litigation filed by the Hindu American Foundation. The statement defended academic freedom, free expression, and the work of organizations engaged in human rights advocacy.
Writing and Thought Leadership
Gandhi has contributed to HfHR’s educational and public engagement work through essays and commentary on democracy, communal violence, and moral responsibility. In 2021, HfHR featured his essay, “On Spate of Atrocities, The Conspicuous Silence of PM and Others,” in which he reflected on the obligations of political leadership amid rising violence and silence from those in power.

Movement-Building and Public Events
Gandhi has also taken part in HfHR’s public events and movement-building efforts. In October 2023, he played a prominent role in the launch of HfHR UK, joining Executive Director Sunita Viswanath and a diverse gathering of activists, scholars, artists, and community leaders. Organizers described his presence as a source of wisdom and moral grounding that helped anchor the gathering.

Peace, Justice, and Kashmir
During HfHR’s Vigil for Peace and Justice in Kashmir, Gandhi was among the scholars, faith leaders, artists, and human rights advocates who contributed messages calling for peace, justice, and nonviolence amid escalating conflict in the region. His participation reflected his longstanding commitment to dialogue, reconciliation, and the protection of human dignity across religious and national divides.

Election Watch Commentary
Gandhi has also contributed political reflections to HfHR’s Election Watch, bringing his historian’s perspective to contemporary democratic life in India. Reflecting on elections in West Bengal, he wrote:
“...Modi and Shah and their party, currently in power in virtually all the states of northern, central, and western India, will now also occupy, for the very first time, the political throne in the great eastern city of Kolkata. A tenacious woman has lost and Modi and Shah have won. Notwithstanding the tilted scales, a majority of the state’s voters may have wanted a change after three five-year terms of rule by Banerjee and her TMC, which was accused of permitting local-level party bosses to extort helpless citizens.”
