Dalit History Month: Remembering, Learning, and Standing in Accountability

For organizations that are not Dalit-led, observing Dalit History Month should be more than a gesture of recognition. It should be a time to listen, to learn from Dalit voices, and to reflect on what real solidarity requires. For an organization like Hindus for Human Rights, that means amplifying Dalit histories and perspectives without speaking over them, recognizing that caste oppression is ongoing, and treating this month not as a performance of inclusion but as part of a deeper commitment to justice.

Observed each April, the birth month of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Dalit History Month emerged from efforts by Dalit-Bahujan thinkers and organizers to reclaim histories erased or diminished by dominant caste narratives. It invites us to understand Dalit history not as marginal, but as central to the story of resistance, democracy, labor, culture, and liberation in South Asia and across the diaspora.

Dalit History Month brings forward the stories, achievements, and intellectual traditions of Dalit communities that have too often been excluded from public memory. It is both a celebration of resilience and a call to accountability: to name caste clearly, to support Dalit-led work, and to build forms of solidarity that last beyond April.
