Justice on Hold: Umar Khalid’s Story of Resistance (Webinar)
Hosted by: Diaspora in Action for Human Rights and Democracy (DAHRD)
In collaboration with: Human Rights Foundation
Diaspora in Action for Human Rights and Democracy (DAHRD) is hosting an online webinar examining the case of student activist Umar Khalid, who has remained in pre-trial detention for over five years following his arrest on September 13, 2020.
Khalid was taken into custody by Delhi Police in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots and charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). His case has become emblematic of concerns about the use of prolonged pre-trial detention to suppress dissent and narrow democratic space in India.
This discussion will examine the Delhi riots conspiracy case, the legal and human rights dimensions of Khalid’s detention, and broader questions about democracy, dissent, and due process.
Speakers
Dr. Banojyotsna Lahiri — SPECT Research Association; Umar Khalid’s partner
