Join Hindus for Human Rights for a screening of Lalit Vachani’s documentary Prisoner No. 626710 Is Present (कैदी नंबर 626710 हाज़िर है), about Indian scholar and activist Umar Khalid’s imprisonment and the criminalization of dissent.
Through archival footage of Khalid’s speeches and accounts from his close friends Banojyotsna Lahiri and Shuddhabrata Sengupta, the film examines the events preceding his arrest and the role of Hindu nationalist media in constructing the narrative against him.
The screening offers an opportunity to engage with questions of religious discrimination, political imprisonment and the right to challenge state power.
