Washington, DC (May 19th, 2026) – Hindus for Human Rights is heartbroken to hear of the shooting at the San Diego Islamic Center, which resulted in the violent, senseless deaths of three individuals, including mosque security guard Amin Abdullah. Today and every day, we stand in solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters and stay steadfast in our commitment to fight Islamophobia, both across the United States and South Asia.
Now more than ever, we call on politicians to take a stand against Islamophobia and commit to breaking the cycle of hatred towards Muslims in their communities. The Islamic Center shooting is being investigated as a hate crime – but this cruel act of hatred is not an isolated incident.
Islamophobia has long been embedded in the very fabric of American culture, with entire bureaucratic structures being formed to police Muslim Americans. During the Trump Administration, we have seen a spike in violent Islamophobia. From the White House to the halls of Congress, government officials have dehumanized Muslim Americans in their words and in legislation.
It was inevitable that this hatred, coming from the top and seeping through the internet, would tear our social fabric. It is imperative that those in power take a stand against hate of all kinds – including Islamophobia. No one should be targeted through rhetoric, policy, or violence because of how they pray.
During this difficult and tragic time, community is more important than ever. We encourage our allies, coalition partners, friends, and followers to check in on their Muslim neighbors and friends, and provide support during a time of fear, isolation, and division.
Additionally, we strongly encourage donations to the Islamic Center of San Diego Victim and Family Support Fund, as well as the LaunchGood fundraiser to support the family of Amin Abdullah.
Together, we are stronger. In the face of hate, we double down on our mission of truth, justice, peace, and love for all people, everywhere.
