Hindus for Human Rights Condemns Murder of Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, MN; Demands an Independent Investigation

January 8th, 2026 (New York, NY) – Hindus for Human Rights demands an independent investigation and legal proceedings against an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who brutally shot and killed a young mother, Renee Nicole Good, in Minneapolis on January 7. We share our horror and grief with everyone in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and across the country who has been terrorized by ICE and other federal officers as part of this administration’s cruel pursuit of mass deportation of all immigrants.

City and state leaders have been clear that this kind of federal surge was unnecessary and destabilizing. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey publicly rejected the government’s self-defense narrative after reviewing the video, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz warned that this operation is designed to generate fear and conflict with deadly consequences.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem rushed to label this event as “domestic terrorism” while the key facts are actively disputed by video and local officials. Noem has a well-documented pattern of false and misleading public claims, and yet again, Noem has weaponized misinformation to shield her department from accountability.

Our Advisory Board member, Anantanand Rambachan, who is a Professor Emeritus at St. Olaf College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, emphasizes the practice of ahimsa during this time: “Every human life is sacred and our hearts are broken in sorrow over the killing of a young mother and her now orphaned children. Our world is diminished by her death. There are constant calls for those exercising a constitutional right to protest to do so non-violently. This call, however, must be also heard and practiced by those acting in the name of the state. This is especially urgent since state actors are equipped with powerful instruments of violence that demand great self-control. I fear that in the current context of aggressive state action, and the rage and anger that are evident, the cycle of violence will only grow worse. There is an urgent need for non-violence.”

The murder of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent, just blocks from where George Floyd was murdered a few years ago, is not just a tragedy for our Minneapolis community but for the entire country. The cold-blooded murder of a US citizen in broad daylight only proves what we’ve known all along—that the invasion of our streets and neighborhoods by the federal government’s fascist thugs, from Minneapolis to Chicago to Portland to D.C., is an attack on all of us. Now more than ever, it’s crucial that our communities come together to resist this invasion, keep our neighbors safe, and send a message to these fascists that they are not welcome here or anywhere else,” says Pranay Somayajula, a Hindus for Human Rights member based out of Minneapolis.

We stand with Minneapolis in demanding answers for this violent incident, and we urge Congress to reassert its power to reduce ICE’s funding levels or abolish the agency altogether. Indeed, ICE’s murder of Good is another reminder that ICE poses a threat to all Americans, regardless of immigration status.

Finally, we honor Renee Nicole Good, and we hold her children and loved ones in our hearts. Renee reminds us of the beauty and divinity of Devi's maternal love for all beings. In her honor, and in the honor of every mother, we must evoke Durga and Kali. It is our sacred duty to use our grief, love, and righteous anger to create a more just and better world.
