Hindus for Human Rights Condemns U.S. Military Assault and “Trusteeship” Claims in Venezuela; Calls for De-Escalation, Due Process, and a Venezuelan-Led Transition

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 5th, 2026 (New York, NY) — Hindus for Human Rights (HfHR) condemns the United States’ weekend military action in Venezuela, including airstrikes and the capture of  President Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores. HfHR denounces any U.S. ambitions to run Venezuela and control its resources. Warfare, imperialism, and resource exploitation are not a human rights strategy.

Venezuelans deserve a future grounded in rights, dignity, self-determination, and genuine democracy. But bombing a sovereign country, removing its head of state by force, and gesturing toward an open-ended U.S. governing role does not bring Venezuela closer to this dream.

“If the United States is serious about human rights in Venezuela, it should support Venezuelans’ democratic agency, protect Venezuelan asylum seekers, and strengthen accountability through lawful international mechanisms,” said Ria Chakrabarty, Senior Policy Director, “This operation is a continuation of centuries of American intervention in the Western Hemisphere, not the overdue return of Venezuelan democracy.”

HfHR stands in solidarity with the Venezuelan human rights defenders, journalists, labor organizers, and community leaders who face the greatest danger whenever the US intervenes in Latin America. Venezuela’s future must be built by Venezuelans.
