NEW YORK, NY — A new report from Savera: United Against Supremacy examines the organizations, individuals and networks supporting RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s upcoming visit to the United States.
“Fibs, Fronts & Fixers: The Hidden Machinery Behind Mohan Bhagwat’s U.S. Visit” traces connections between the visit’s organizers and the broader overseas infrastructure associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
Hindus for Human Rights is a core member of Savera, a multiracial, interfaith and anti-caste coalition formed by South Asian and allied organizations to challenge supremacist politics and build a more pluralistic alternative.
The report comes ahead of Bhagwat’s planned appearance at Madison Square Garden on August 29 at an event promoted under the banner of “Universal Oneness.”
Drawing on public records, organizational documents and Sangh publications, Savera examines who is organizing the visit, the political networks behind it and the gap between the RSS’s public claims about its overseas activities and the evidence documented in its own sources.
“Mohan Bhagwat does not represent Hindus. He represents the fringe, extremist Hindu nationalist movement, which has engaged in hate and violence against religious minority communities for a century,” said Sravya Tadepalli, Deputy Executive Director of Hindus for Human Rights. “In 1939, Madison Square Garden hosted a Nazi rally, which any of us can look back on and feel shock and shame. Madison Square Garden should not make the same mistake by holding a rally celebrating the leader of a hate movement like Hindu nationalism.”
HfHR believes interfaith dialogue and pluralism must be accompanied by transparency, an explicit rejection of caste and religious supremacy, and accountability for political movements operating within diaspora communities.
