Austin, TX; New York, NY; San Francisco, CA; Seattle, WA; Philadelphia, PA (August 7, 2026) --- On August 15, Hindus for Human Rights chapters across the United States will mark India’s Independence Day with gatherings in five cities, bringing together community members committed to the unfinished promise of freedom, equality and democratic rights.
The events come at a consequential moment in India. Nearly eight decades after independence from British colonial rule, questions of who can fully claim the freedoms promised in 1947 remain urgent. Students have recently demonstrated the power of collective action in demanding accountability from public institutions, while workers, farmers, Dalits, Adivasis, religious minorities, journalists and civil society organizations continue to organize around rights, representation and equal citizenship.
Independence Day carries both celebration and responsibility. India’s freedom struggle drew strength from many religious traditions, political movements and communities, and produced a constitutional vision grounded in liberty, equality, fraternity and secular democracy. These gatherings will honor that inheritance while creating space to consider the work still required to realize it.
Hindus for Human Rights chapters will gather on August 15 at the following locations:
AUSTIN, TEXAS: 10:00 AM, outside Hancock Recreation Center
NEW YORK, NEW YORK: 11:00 AM, demonstration outside the Indian Consulate
BAY AREA, CA: 12:00 PM, Chadni Restaurant, Newark, California
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON: 1:00 PM, Zoka Coffee on 56th Street
PHILADELPHIA, PA: 3:00 PM, Fishtown Community Library
The gatherings will vary by city, from public demonstration to community conversation, but share a common conviction: loving India includes defending the rights and dignity of all who call it home.
For Hindus for Human Rights, August 15 is also an opportunity to reclaim the language of patriotism from religious nationalism. Hindu identity and Indian identity do not require exclusion, majoritarianism or silence in the face of injustice. The freedom commemorated on Independence Day is strongest when it protects dissent, welcomes difference and belongs equally to people across religion, caste, class, gender and region.
