Across Cities and Borders, HfHR Communities Will Mark Indian Independence Day
On August 15, Hindus for Human Rights communities across the United States and the United Kingdom will gather to celebrate Indian Independence Day and renew the unfinished work of freedom.
Events are planned in Austin, Philadelphia, the Bay Area, Seattle, New York, Washington, DC, and London. Each gathering will reflect its local community, but all will share a commitment to an India grounded in pluralism, equality, secularism, and human rights.
India’s independence was won through a mass struggle against colonial rule. Its participants came from different religions, castes, regions, languages, and political traditions. They did not agree on every question, but they helped build a movement larger than any single community or ideology.
That history carries particular weight today. Religious nationalism seeks to redefine India through exclusion. Caste continues to shape access to dignity, safety, education, and opportunity. Journalists, activists, students, religious minorities, and political opponents face growing pressure for challenging those in power.
Yet resistance is also growing. Young people confronting paper leaks, corrupt recruitment systems, and vanishing job prospects have taken to the streets across India. Civil society organizations continue to defend constitutional freedoms. Faith leaders and community organizers are creating new forms of solidarity across religious and social divisions. The pluralistic vision of India remains alive because people continue to claim it.
Our Independence Day gatherings will make space for celebration, reflection, and collective action. We will honor the people who struggled against colonialism while recognizing that political independence did not complete the work of liberation. Freedom must be renewed through the choices institutions make, the rights communities defend, and the solidarities people build.
